Re: APOD: Messier 24: Sagittarius Star Cloud (2022 Apr 07)

I bet if you took a straight line from left to right through the center of this image there would be at least 10,000 stars. So if the width of the image is 300ly, that would make the stars less than 0.03 ly apart from each other. Which is only like 2 hundred billion miles between stars. And I'm sure...

If you click on the link, "cosmic tadpole is", it directs you to this site: http://hubblesite.org/image/1181/news_release/2002-11 I am guessing the answer to my question is probably "both" or "neither". But the image on the hubblesite.org website is mirrored in relation...

You know what would be good is if we had an old picture of the Tarantula Nebula before the HST that actually looked like a tarantula. For comparison

There seems to be a lot of hydrogen and oxygen in this nebula. Is there anything that stops these elements from combining to form water?

Re: APOD: Celestial Fireworks: Into Star 2... (2017 Jul 04)

So in this video, we are whizzing by stars which are most likely lightyears apart. This means we're traveling at super relativistic speeds. As such, wouldn't the field of view be a little different than the artist's interpretation?

Re: Accelerating Expansion of the Universe

Chris Peterson wrote: At about redshift z=0.5 the acceleration is zero. At larger redshifts it is negative, and at smaller ones positive. In other words, the rate of expansion of the Universe was decreasing until about 5 billion years ago, was then constant, and has been increasing ever since. Chri...

It appears to be hexagonal in shape. Is there any known reason for this and could it be linked to Saturn's hexagonal south polar vortex? It has nothing to do with Saturn's hexagonal south polar vortex. It is probably some sort of extension of the inner symmetries: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110424...

Re: APOD: Milky Way Galaxy Doomed: Collision... (2012 Jun 04

The explanation states that they will merge to form an elliptical galaxy. Considering that the two galaxies have supermassive black holes at the center of each (correct me if I'm wrong) wouldn't we end up with a state where the gravity of the black holes dominate the geometry of the system possibly ...

Does this put even a slight dent in Big Bang Theory? I always wonder how much we don't understand. Given that we are born and die and many scientists come from backgrounds involving creation theories isn't there any skepticism within the scientific community that maybe the interpretation of the empi...

Time Dilation

If you could travel near the speed of light, time would slow down. And as you approach the speed of light, the rate of time approaches zero. So if you could experience the world from the frame of reference of a photon wouldn't your motion across space be instantaneous?
