Re: APOD: UGC 1810: Wildly Interacting Galaxy... (2020 Oct 18)

If there have been "wild and violent" gravitational interactions distorting the orbits of the stars, does that mean that each star's equivalent of an Oort Cloud and Kuiper belt have been perterbed and any planetary bodies are (were) being pummelled by millions of rocks and comets? If so it...

Re: APOD: Pleiades: The Seven Sisters Star Cluster (2020 Sep 09)

Superb image. I do, however have a request. For images where there is no definite 'right way up', could you display them in landscape rather than portrait orientation, please? Most will be viewed on computer screens in landscape orientation, and it would be more impressive to view full screen. Thanks.

Re: APOD: Magnetic Streamlines of the Milky Way (2020 Jun 17)

This would be awesome as a full Virtual Reality experience, with the viewer able to experience the whole sky like a Van Gogh painting, or could it be available as a poster sized print?

Re: APOD: The Porpoise Galaxy from Hubble (2020 May 10)

The photograph is superb, but it makes me sad. It is reasonable to assume that each stellar system has its own Oort Cloud, Kuiper belt, and possibly asteroid belt. The orbits of objects in these belts will have been as perturbed as those of the stars in the galaxy, and each and every planet orbitin...

Re: APOD: An Extraordinary Spiral from LL Pegasi (2010 Sep 1

What is most striking about this spiral is that it appears to be an arithmatic spiral, NOT a logarithmic spiral, which are the kind nature normally produces, including galaxies, duh. Any clues as to why? The arithmetic spiral is produced because the matter emitted by the rotating star is not accele...

Re: APOD: Eclipse Shadow Cone Over Patagonia (2010 Aug 04)

It just goes to show you don't need a super-telephoto lens to take an excellent eclipse photograph. Just wondering what focal length lens was used though, in case I have the opportunity. I'd guess 35mm judging by the size of the eclipsed sun in the frame.
