Re: APOD: Milky Way above Atacama Salt Lagoon (2014 Sep 16)
The atmospheric transparency does degrade toward the horizon as light travels through more air mass and leads to brighter limiting magnitude (referred to as atmospheric extinction). This clarity directly correlates to sky quality, i.e. darker skies typically have better quality toward the horizon. ...

You wouldn't catch me as close to a sinkhole as the photographer's fiancé is. That's just too dangerous!! It wasn't so dangerous as it might seem, although I admit that when I realized what it is, deep in the night, I suddenly felt a bit uneasy :) Especially when I remembered reading that it's 40m ...

Lunar Halo in the Eifel mountains Many thousands of years ago, this used to be Europe's volcanism hotsport: the Eifel supervolcano field. Today, only volcanic lakes (Maars) in former magma chambers of cinder cones remain, as the one shown here in Schalkenmehren, Germany. An intense lunar halo is al...

NGC 660 A fine example of a polar ring galaxy, NGC 660 is over 20 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces. Polar ring galaxies have a large population of gas, dust and stars orbiting the galaxy in a ring-like feature. The image was taken with the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope in L...

Planets align Copyright: Alex Tudorica A little more than one year ago, three planets decided to join the sunset show: Jupiter, Venus and of-course, Earth. The dark silhouette of Mount Teide, the highest volcano in the Atlantic ocean, is seen against the bright and colorful twilight after sunset. O...

Re: Turning Amateur APOD Images into Scientific Papers
I think it would be quite interesting to do a little research if something is unusual/unexplained in my images. Mr. Les Cowley is in my opinion the best person to tell us if something is indeed odd or if the phenomenon is still quite within the realm of the explainable. Unfortunately, I'll be quite ...

Hello, First I would like to thank you for the APOD, it was quite a surprise for me this time and I found out from some of my friends just before an important exam :). Second, I'd like to apologize because I checked and I didn't clearly specified in my email message the phenomenon that I photographe...
