Re: APOD: Three CubeSats Released (2014 Jan 06)

How is data collected by these cubes relayed back to the students that put them together? Has this kind of release been done more than once? Are these cubes made by students from various universities? There must be some kind of application process to the ISS officials to be allowed to participate in...

Re: APOD: Three CubeSats Released (2014 Jan 06)

Despite the fascinating visual effect of the little cubes being set aflight, the involvement of students and the great poetry above, my first thoughts go to the problems of tracking them as they possibly become "space trash" that could collide with satellites and maybe even interfere someh...

It seems to me that the horse head in this cloud has already become less distinct than the first pictures that I saw of it years ago.

Had me wondering as to the possibilities that a mathematical formula could be "strung out" on something when it was generating this ??

Then wondering how such a structure could be made into a workable habitat on some strange planet with transport tubes linking modules ....

Re: APOD: Light Pillars over Finland (2013 Dec 18)

I do like a slight deviation on APOD's part from pure astronomical subjects ~~ I finally "got" what these light/sun pillars were all about.

And look at that street lined with those white-barked birch trees. I love them; unfortunately, they aren't a Southern tree ...

Re: APOD: Galaxy Cluster Abell 1689 Deflects Light (2013 Sep

Being the ol' country gal that I am, I can easily judge in my mind how tall a tree is ~or~ how far down the road a post is ~or~ approximately how many acres in a pasture BUT trying to grasp the enormity of space in that picture is mind-blowing (dark matter or whatever it is out there).

Re: APOD: The Quiet Sagittarius A (2013 Sep 06)

Then I wondered if the black hole could ever collapse and if it did, what would happen to our galaxy ..... if the black hole did collapse, could another one form there? You could think of a black hole as being the ultimate form of collapsed matter. I don't think it's even possible for it to collaps...

Re: APOD: The Quiet Sagittarius A (2013 Sep 06)

Since I'm not trained in this field at all, I usually struggle with the terminology and vocabulary style used here. It took me halfway through the links to realize that Sagittarius A* isn't a star but the point that marks the central black hole. As I was reading the links, I started wondering how ou...

Re: APOD: Delphinid Meteor Mystery (2013 Jun 15)

I found it absolutely amazing that, from an unexpected and largely unverified meteor spotting back in 1930, a prediction for a possible re-sighting could be made for June 10, 2013 ..... How could enough information be captured back then to be able to make this prediction?
