Re: APOD: The Milky Way Over Pulpit Rock (2010 Jul 05)

Alex - thanks for taking the time to write up your family's story behind the photos - I loved the companion photo as well - they make a great pair! Iceinspace was fun to explore - I put it on my list of favorites to explore again in the future. Owlice - love the biking tour link - I've followed her ...

Re: APOD: HCG 87: A Small Group of Galaxies (2010 Jul 06)

The link for the "local group of galaxies" in the description above takes you to a mind-blowing list of galaxies that are considered the "local group" - I thought that I was starting to get a wee sense of ly distances in space until I read this - my little set of synapses is back...

Owlice - what an adventure!! I'd loved to plan for a month's walkabout - I've wanted to visit Australia/New Zealand ever since the last ice age .... ((grin)) I'll be 72 in 3 years but hopefully, I'll still have enough git-up in my git-along .....

What a wonderful photo - if I lived there, I'd could turn into a totally noctural creature just to be able to glance up for this view!

Re: APOD: Galaxies on a String (2010 Jul 02)

Just by looking at the picture, it seems that NGC 5216 (top) has already absorbed much of NGC 5218's material. The use of the word "tides" in galactic interactions is so different from "tides" here on Earth where the effects of tides are so much more fluid, immediate and with the...

Re: GRED Answer: Double slit with fast lensless video screen

It seems to me that the interference pattern will still be recorded on the video frames. The big difference would seem to be the frame speed of the video recorder relative to the emission rate of the photons. It the video recorder frame speed is faster than the emission rate of the photons, then it ...

Re: APOD: The Red Rectangle Nebula from Hubble (2010 Jun 14)

What a fascinating picture. If it hadn't been mentioned that this was a Hubble photo I would have thought that it was a photo taken on some rainy night driving along a dark highway with some unique distortions of a bright light on the highway. The straight lines, right angles and almost precise symm...

Babak Tafreshi seems to have a magic ticket that allows him to travel to just the right spot at the right time - he does such a marvelous job capturing an image. I really like the supplied overlay that helps identify the stars in the base image.

Previously I had posted a question about the use of false-color in astrophotographs - sort of with a personal feeling as to why not just use colors that our human eyes are more acustomed to from the world around us. One of the board members kindly answered, saying that false-color frequently emphasi...

Re: GRED Answer: Double slit experiment with single electron

I just watched the little video several times and have some questions: Why don't you get some kind of dispersal pattern with a single slot if an electron has some wave properties? So what happens if the two slits are moved further apart? Or if a 3rd slit is introduced in parallel to the first two? O...

I thought photons traveled in wave patterns but electrons weren't subject to wave pattern propagations.
