Re: APOD: The Medusa Nebula (2021 Mar 26)
Hi all, would you think that one see a crescent shape because the nebula has this actual shape or because one cannot see another part of it, symetrical. In other words, could the nebula have a rotational symmetry that we could not see or barely see ? In order to find an answer, I processed the image...

Re: APOD: Starry Night by Jean-Francois Millet (2020 Mar 13)
Millet has produced a partially accurate painting of the winter night sky. Starting with the belt of Orion, one sees it points down (roughly) to Sirius and can see the other major stars of Canis Major. In the other direction (going up from the belt) the accuracy seems to fail, as it looks like Alde...

Re: APOD: Starry Night by Jean-Francois Millet (2020 Mar 13)
I agree, then the blurry stars below them and at top right wouldn't be far out of place for Orion's sword and the Pleiades. Maybe Procyon for the bright star on the left? To me, Sirius, rather than Procyon, is more "in-line" with Orion's Belt. Looks like Procyon and Orion's Belt to me. Ot...

Re: APOD: Orion Rising over Brazil (2019 Sep 30)
Hello all,
Really a beautiful photograph !
To me, it is striking how many stars are aligned in a stream going roughly from Mintaka to the Great Orion's nebula, along the Orion's sword.
And from all the Orion's belt, stars seem to be aligned in the same direction as the Orion's sword.

Re: APOD: Rosetta's Farewell (2016 Oct 01)
I have a couple of questions : Was it was not possible to let Rosetta sleep for some years until the comet returns ? Would it stay in orbit around the comet all this time ? Would the battery or some other component be damaged by the cold at Jupiter's distance from the sun ? So would it be a dead spa...

Re: APOD: Gravity's Grin (2015 Nov 27)
Thus, while there are lots of images and examples, it takes special circumstances, and those are rather rare. Of course, it depends on how you choose to define "common" (or "rare"). There are dozens (or even hundreds) of examples of visible lensed structures (but of course, take...

Re: APOD: Approaching Asteroid Ceres (2015 Jan 20)
hello, my post is relatively unrelated to Ceres, rather loosely related to Dawn spacecraft. I found on Dawn website a simulated view of our inner solar system from Dawn, in which some stars from Orion and Taurus constellations are depicted. See http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/live_shots.asp In this...

What strikes me is the fact that many streams of white dots seem to converge to our galaxy and nobody seems to care of that ???
Would our galaxy be at the center of the Universe ?
Also, please, I would like to know if we see just a cutting plane or a projection on a plane ?

Please can someone answer this question:
are they three channels of infrared seen in false colors,
or is it simply red channel replaced by infrared ?
Thanks

Re: Coincidence with 2012 DA14
This is only possible if the body is in orbit around the Earth in the first place. Otherwise it doesn't have a perigee at all. A body in a solar orbit can't be captured by the Earth except by aerobraking- losing energy after dipping into the atmosphere. Such a meteor can, potentially, touch the atm...

Thanks, Art, for your quick reponse. I am able to see the same characteristic in some other images of M13, not all. I marked the images with pointers to the discontinuity that I see. I don't want to pollute this forum with images. If you want to see them, just ask. It is probably a simple alignment ...
