Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Me again ! @ Chris : I tried do make some new simulations, I hope less confusing Description: - a collimated beam (set of parallel rays) - a window : composed of 2 surfaces with air in-between (the glass thickness of each pane is neglected) The inclination of the incident beam on the windo...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

I made some simple calculation about deformation of a window. The drawing represents the two pieces of a double glazing window. (The glass thickness of each panes is not represented). bend.GIF Considering the very large radius of curvature, we can make the approximation of parabolic shape y = x^2/(2...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Interesting pictures : from by room, through the double glazing window, looking at the street light (at around 100-150m, can be considered at infinity). We can clearly see the direct image and 2 ghosts. The only difference between the 3 photos is that I am looking through different areas of the wind...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Just an idea (I am not pretending to be the case here  ) : what if the window suffer from constraints like atmospheric pressure or thermal dilatation ? I explain : - atmospheric pressure can vary a little, but the gap inside the double glazing window is a hermetic cavity, thus the two piece...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Naos, I'd bet if you could run that simulation with the initial line going down, the lines would all shoot out the other way.
This case is already represented in the other drawing (if you rotate it 180 deg around the initial ray).

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

I completely agree with your analysis : The fact is that the direction of multiple images seen through a pair of glass plates it completely independent of the orientation of those plates with respect to the source and observer. It depends only on the orientation of the two plates with respect to eac...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

I only take one ray (representing the direction of the sun). The ray comes from the left of the drawing and goes to right. This ray hits a a window composed of two surfaces that can reflect and transmit light. The angle of incidence choosen here is 45° And last : the two surfaces of the windows are ...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

I made some exports from Zemax. EXPORT2.GIF EXPORT1.GIF The sign of the tilt determines the sign of the deviation of the ghosts. Left or right deviation does not depend on the global orientation of the window, and it only depends on the value and sign of the tilt between the two panes of glass. The ...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Hello, @ green1 : why do you use a point source at finite distance to represent the sun in your last drawings ? it seems quite strange to me. I would have used a set of collimated beams coming from a direction +/- 0.25 degree (= 0.5 degree, apparent angular size of the sun) @ geckzilla I have tested...
