Re: APOD: Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1365 from Webb (2024 Nov 13)

Finally, I want to remind everyone that I am a complete amateur. I love galaxies, and I love to try to understand why they are the way they are, and I love to compare them with other galaxies. I really do my best to try to understand what is going on, as long as I can understand it in a non-mathema...

Re: APOD: NGC 602: Stars Versus Pillars from Webb (2024 Oct 29)

Oh my goodness.
The incredible detail - the subtlies that have been revealed (again) - and the galaxies.
Oh, the galaxies!
Not much of a discussion for me on this.
And the juxtaposition of the two images is at least as inspiring as either one individually.
The old mind has been blown.

Re: APOD: Caught (2024 Oct 23)

Ok, this is indeed a very impressive engineering feat! But why are they "catching" the booster instead of having it land under its own power like the Falcon boosters? Is the Starship booster too heavy to be supported by landing legs? If I remember correctly, the reason is that it removes ...

Re: APOD: Chemicals Glow as a Meteor Disintegrates (2023 Jul 24)

Is the meteor trail blue gold or yellow green? After 4 decades, I still don't see my clothes the same way as my wife. Just dreaming here - wouldn't it be great if we purposely orbited a bunch of retrograde particles into earth orbit and used them to measure upper atmosphere properties? Might save a ...

Well. I didn't read on after that. And I decided never to read a book by Larry Niven again.
Ann
Thank you for this summary Ann!
Now I have no regrets for ever reading this, or Niven.
I once thought Heinlein brilliant, but his mysogyny creates quite the bitter aftertaste.

I do remember this observatory fondly because of a little known program that appeared when the series 10 OS was introduced on the mac. For the life of me, I can't remember its name or author, but he was rather famous for creating the simulated waves in large-scale hollywood productions. He did it as...

I'll upvote SteveH on the lava tube skylight hypothesis.
It might be that we don't see any other skylights because they:
1) Happen infrequently, especially so the more time passes from their formation, and
2) Once open, they are filled in from above. (instantaneously in geologic time frames)

Stunning and wonderful as always. It might read easier if you ...
