Re: The Mysterious Voynich Manuscript (2010 Jan 31)

I shouldn't try to guess about this, but since I have underwear almost as old I'll give it a try. This looks like an Atlantian laundry receipt. Twelve days to collect your dry cleaning may seam tight but when you look at their convienant hours it should be reasonable. This receit looks to be for sev...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

So what we need now is a metorologist to explain how two convection layers with ice crystals caused by warm land mass' on either side of a cool calm body of water on an oblique angle to the sun would cause a horizontaly shifted image (just cut and paiste). That or this is an optical illusion.

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

So don't split hairs.
The glass panes if any are just two more elements in the cameras lens.

Dave's post didn't like a natural horizontal phenomenon which I think still stands. That makes this an optical ilussion.

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

The broken camera just reduces it to a simple explination. For what it is worth I still haven't found out if the camera uses a prism for the view finder. Most links don't mention the thru the lens viewfinder so I don't know for sure if it even has one. Is there a window in the picture or just a dirt...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

How about if I just look at some of the previous posts. If light comes in from the left it bounces right. if you move the camera the image moves. The moon shots show a clearer secondary image then the primary. Ours show considerable distortion (mostly horizontal and on both sides). I don't know why ...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

So the building sets at 115 degrees (and the window if closed) and the sun was at maybe 75. So wouldnt the reflections be on the right side?

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Sorry for diverting from the glass in front argument. Since it gets down to if this picture is doctored or not all that is needed is to provide a viable explination (or two) that would put the burden of proof back on the photographer (Who should have taken dozens of pictures from difrent locations)....

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

A cannon s51, f2.4 is the macro, 72 mm 3.5f I guess that's a one inch lens. It does have image stabilization. The knowledge base I found most interesting follows Try forcing the lens. More people have reported success with this method than with any of the other methods. Variations include gently pul...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

There must be something more we are missing. The double pain glass/camera optics vs it a real atmospheric phenomena side is about down to raising hands. It is a very pretty area. The Google satellite image doesn't do it justice at all. I was looking just because I thought it might be a sunset. If so...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

This forum could sure use a project manager. It is getting hard wadeing thru all of the arguments that say the same thing. Do the images change size! reflections thru a glass don't, marages are inverted. Going back to the beginning APOD in a vailed statement said it is the camera. This post has gone...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Check the boat or oil drick- whatever.

Ignore the double stack; there is an obvious waver in the verticle lines. It looks like a marage senerio would explain at least one image.

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

It has been fun but work is almost over & I have to go play now. Just one more observation. The colors do go white - yellow- orange or maybe yellow, orange, red: just like you would expect from refracting light. I also droped the brightness and uped the contrast just to make sure the size change...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

The reflection is 10% smaller. Does that rule out plate glass? I can't get a good measurement on the second reflection but I think it is less then 10% smaller then the previous. There are clouds over head, clouds in front of the sun and it looks like clouds behind. Is there a ripple of moisture seve...
