Re: APOD: A Twisted Meteor Trail Over Tenerife (2010 Jun 02)

Jarred Camera? There doesn't seem to be any evidence of that in the stars. Anyone who has thrown rocks off a high cliff will have seen this effect - though I've not managed a hypersonic launch yet! Anyone know where I can get hold of some open-source software for analysing hypersonic 'flight' or is ...

Re: APOD: IC 418: The Spirograph Nebula (2010 Apr 11)

The patterns do remind me of ripples on water from sound. I wonder if they might be remnants of some complicated wave pattern from the top of the star as it exploded. A baby big bang perhaps or... Could it even be that something fell into the (relatively inactive) star causing the ripples on the sur...

Re: APOD: Binary Black Hole in 3C 75 (2010 Mar 14)

Cheers neufer - abuse is the first sign of a lost argument - quoting Shakespeare must come a close second. A point for getting the quote. Chris P - perhaps but the black holes must, by their own definition appear stationary to us. The event horizon is, to all intents and purposes, an immutable, immo...

Re: APOD: Binary Black Hole in 3C 75 (2010 Mar 14)

So we have two black holes whose event horizons are, according to relativity, not moving as far as we can see, circling each other.
Sweet!

Re: P2010 A2: Unusual Asteroid Tail Implies... (2010 Feb 03)

If the asteroid is 140m across then its gravity will be pretty low. A nuclear explosion would pretty much wipe it out and debris would be flung much further that appears to be the case, and the moulding by light suggests something a lot more gentle. Was there a secondary impact - that would be neede...

Re: Unusual Light Pillars Over Latvia (2009 January 12)

I believe the pillar is caused by light reflecting of horizontally oriented flat crystals. Someone might like to see if they can calculate the angle that the trumpet starts but I would imagine that this is caused by light reflecting/refracting off the far edge of these crystals and is only visible w...
