Re: APOD: Fly Over Pluto (2015 Jul 18)

Perhaps not a lake but I can imagine the shocked ice forming a slush that would take a while to solidify.

Re: APOD: Fly Over Pluto (2015 Jul 18)

OK Tombaugh region has to be an impact crater on the left with ejecta moving out to the right up and down. I've a feeling this was some large slow moving object that made a splash but also a slump/wave of ice that formed the mountain ranges as well. The polygonal patterns in the flat plain area are ...

What is the current thinking on why globular clusters haven't formed into galaxies. ? Or perhaps that is why have so many globular clusters formed into galaxies ?? Just what I was wondering! Is there any open-source software with examples to play with to simulate this sort of thing? I've got a coup...

This can also be achieved by windblown sand and soils. I'm not saying there wasn't water on Mars but there are many features attributed to water that can as easily be explained by dry geology, and in many cases the 'dry' solution (???) seems more applicable.

Re: APOD: Stars, Sprites, Clouds, Auroras (2015 Feb 04)

Is there any research on sprites published anywhere? I know there is a possibly similar effect over fault lines that gives rise to lights in the sky (and much ufo chatter) and I believe the mechanism to be similar: If you send a pulse of current down a length of wire (ground/sky) then you generate a...

Thanks Geckzilla - they were fun. I'd like to see how the whole nebula is growing though -we should have nigh on a hundred years of images around the place. I may have to collect a few and see if I can make a vid.

Re: APOD: Unusual Rocks near Pahrump Hills on Mars (2014 Sep

I've seen lava bombs that are pretty much spherical so I'm guessing the same thing could happen with ejecta from meteorite impacts - a lump of molten material is thrown high enough to allow it to cool as a solid sphere before returning through the thin atmosphere and landing somewhere soft enough no...

Re: APOD: No X-rays from SN 2014J (2014 Aug 16)

I've always been worried by the use of Type1as as a mega-light-year-stick as the theory relies on them not spinning much but trigger mechanism requires mass from a partner to fall in which would almost certainly lead to massive spin. This could, or course, mean that they are still within an order of...

Re: APOD: Venus' Once Molten Surface (2013 Jun 23)

Just wondering if these might not be old meteorite scars. If the rock is so hot then it may be more like a non-newtonian fluid so impacts dont result in lots of ejecta and the energy released eventually results in these lava mounds.

The forks in the paths suggest that this is not what is happening - they show no evidence of either side being favoured as would happen if it were blocks sliding down from above.
