Re: APOD: Olympus Mons: Largest Volcano in the... (2023 Apr 04)
Curious: Near the center of Olympus Mons is what appears to be bombardment craters. Although it looks like a crater caldera, it appears more likely to be a series of strikes, perhaps from a 'string of pearls' hit by a shattered asteroid. Am I correct?

Re: APOD: Comet NEOWISE Rising over the Sea... (2022 Jul 26)
Over 30 minutes of image the comet will not appear to move much at all, at least to an unaided eye. I found the Noctilucent clouds more fascinating!

An amazing image. Is this object planar or spherical? How can you tell?

There appears to be a comet at left center of the image. Would this be Encke?

Re: APOD: Dark Skies: Turn on the Night (2019 May 16)
Am I missing something? The After image shows the stars and Orion constellation higher in the sky than the Before image, indicating the After image was taken first. Barring a temporal inversion in only part of the galaxy, this seems anomalous. Any thoughts?

Those elements are created on Earth in the super colliders. Not (yet) known in nature.

Re: APOD: Eclipsing the Sun (2011 Jan 05)
Kudos to Thierry Legault - what a great picture!! I'm amazed at the planning, calculations, timing that had to go into getting this photo! The clarity is wonderful! But I'm curious - 1/5000 second is beyond human reflexes (at least it is beyond mine) - is this photo taken with some kind of ultra-hi...

Re: APOD: Layered Hills in Arabia Terra on Mars (2010 Aug 15
Since these are formed in what is apparently sedimentary rock layers, could they be sink holes? Put a layer of sand on a cardboard, then punch a hole it it. The effect looks about the same, especially if the sand is compacted in layers. Maybe a bubble formed the hills and left a void below that late...

Re: Is APOD a blog?
To blog, or not to blog, that is the questions. (Sorry, Bard) Is it really improtant how you categorize this site? We aren’t discussing a new name, or a different format. It is only a question posed as to how the site might be promoted. For the purposes of getting exposure to more people, sure, call...

APOD: Analemma Over the Porch of Maidens
The caption explains that changing the time or location would change the appearance of the annalemma. What change will there be over the course of several years? Will the next year be identical? How long until the annalemma repeats exactly?
