Don't know about the first open tube design. But without detracting from the magnificent 60" reflector on Mt Wilson, didn't Herschel build a successful reflecting telescope (48") in 1785? The way I read the caption, this 60" was the 'first' large reflecting telescope period. Seemed a ...
