I love to see photos of these Gas Giants, but I can't help wondering how they came to be. Are they failed stars? Why does the gas not disperse?

Colliding galaxies and their effect on inhabited planets.
I wonder how the gravitation of colliding galaxies would effect planets that are inhabited. There must be millions of them out there. Would a collision between galaxies destroy planets by pulling them away from their sun?
