Re: Weather!
When I gave up on my dream of ever discovering anything significant in science or math (...my neat little complex number math discovery turned out to be ~80 years too late) I was truly delighted to find that I was able to discover something new just about every week in regards to the authorship que...

I'll make a note of the date in my iPhone, with a reminder set to alert me at, say, 10,000 years in advance. By then I ought to co-exist with the device, so I'll be sure to get the wake-up call.

Shouldn't that be a Mediterranean beach rather than Atlantic? Technically it should be the Tyrrhenian Sea. But Mediterranean would have been a lot better than the Atlantic. Surprised by the error on APOD. Never seen a big miss like this before. Is the Mediterranean not part of the Atlantic? Whateve...

Re: Bugs? Problems? Report them here!
When I went back to Firefox and loaded the Asterisk, I was immediately logged in and have stayed that way for the past couple of days. I stopped using FF some months ago due to stability problems, but it has been updated and seems to be fine, so I'll likely stick with it. It was my preferred browser...

Logged out again this morning. :-0
So I tried going into Safari Prefs > Privacy > manage sites and deleting the cookie there, but I didn't find an asterisk cookie at all. I found an apod one and deleted that, then came back here and logged in again. Onward and upward, I hope.

Re: Bugs? Problems? Report them here!
I almost always view the Asterisk from my home iMac, which doesn't even move from room to room. So it's not an IP issue -- unless my WIFI modem is disconnecting and reconnecting to the 'net according to its own needs. This morning, more than 48 hours after the last de-log episode, I find I am suitab...

And this morning, for no reason I can discern, I found I was logged out on the Board Index page, which has never happened before. This is after a few days of not being logged out unexpectedly.

The image is 491 px wide, and the large squarish block bottom-right (indicated below) is about 40 px wide. Poking my calculator tells me that rock is therefore about 45.6 m or about 150 of King John's feet in width. As it appears more or less square, that makes it roughly 15 stories high. That's a h...

Interesting how close are the quantities of stars categorized as blue vs red, 1.3819 billion vs 1.3835 billion. Almost a tie.

Works fine for me in a quite stock Safari in Mac OS. Also works on my iPad in Safari, though there's some pops and spits in the sound--almost like old radio! Probably overloading the sound processing chip/software/memory.

Copy and paste the error message and search google for it between quotes, but only the part after the filename. I tried earlier with what Mark Bour had written, but I think it may have been paraphrased. That is how I solve at least 90% of all issues I have with computers. Alternatively, screenshot ...

Re: Placing two or more images inline in a post
When I use the "Full Editor & Preview" feature on this board, it gives the option of uploading image files and placing them inline in the post. This seems to be a popular tactic in posts, which in some cases adds significantly to their value. In my case, I mostly just add images for h...

Re: Sydney: 340,000 Stars' DNA Interrogated in Search for Sun's Lost Siblings
Nowhere in that article is there any support for the subtitle "Chemical clues could reveal starry clusters before the Big Bang". The only mention of the Big Bang in the article is exactly what you'd expect, saying "The ‘DNA’ collected traces the ancestry of stars, showing astronomers ...

...But how small is NGC 3344 really? According to my software, Guide, which quotes the NGC/IC Project, the distance to NGC 3344 is 59 million light-years. If the galaxy is at that distance, its luminosity, according to Guide and the NGC/IC Project is 9 billion suns, or 0.4 times the Milky Way. But ...

How these ancient 40-meter high pillars formed is yet unknown. I don't think that's really true. Structures like this exist around the world, and their formation is at least broadly understood as the result of weathering and erosion of softer surrounding material. That schists like this form in nar...
