Columbus Laboratory Installation

Thanks Neufer for the information on the journals but they do seem like rather a long read, so as time is of the essence I will unfortunately have to put that one on hold for the present. I have come up with a NASA site instead. GROWING PLANTS IN ZERO - G There is good information on experiments car...

The Bay of Rainbows

[quote="geonuc"]I've read that it is because the crust is thicker on the far side, allowing less mare volcanism after an impact occurs. Why it is thicker on that side, I'm less sure. The differential crust thickness is a result of tidal forces, particularly when the moon formed.[/quote Tha...

1700s Solar Eclipse Painting, movies (APOD 28 Jan 2008)

Can I hazard a guess, is APOD now venturing into the artistic world? The marble pillars are of poor quality. Pure Italian Marble would have been of better use, enhancing the astronomical painting.

Hurricane Ivan from the Space Station (APOD 13 Jan 08)

Can similarities be drawn between hurricanes and galaxies? Their shape is much the same, and both have the point of greatest rotational force within the Eye and the Black Hole.

mars and orion over monument valley

The rocks are eroded over millions of years by weathering. Rain and wind are the principal eroding factors. They finally end up in the seas and oceans creating sedimentary formations of the future. In the case of Monument Valley where temperature ranges are high the rate of erosion would be greater,...

Does it matter whether the rocks are igneous or sedimentary? The APOD is breathtaking, especially with Mars shining so brightly in a non-light-polluted sky.
