Re: 4 October 2009 Same Colour Illusion

Seems I answered the post at the bottom of page 1 without realising there were already several postings on page 2.

Re: 4 October 2009 Same Colour Illusion

G'day, David, It's my understanding that something had to cast a shadow so that square B would actually be darker, although our mind's eye would see it as remaining 'white', so why not a green cylinder? Would you have preferred a blue cube? Cheers, Carl (PS I'm glad I started this thread - so...

Re: 4 October 2009 Same Colour Illusion

G'day, Thank you, Kevin, Jerry. I now understand what was intended. What was particularly useful was the link you provided, Jerry, which permitted an 'isolation sheet' to cover the background. I got some paper and did the same with the APOD illustration by holding them to the screen and masking ever...

4 October 2009 Same Colour Illusion

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap091004.html G'day, I think I've missed something. It appears that the illusion is trying to tell me that a black square of the 'chess board' is the same colour as a white square. Despite the shadow of the green cylinder, I still think that the colour of square A is differ...

APOD 7 July Southern Cross

G'day,
Not only does Australia show the Southern Cross on its national flag, so does New Zealand! (No, we're not the sixth state of Australia.)

APOD 19 November AURORA

G'day, As a rank amateur who likes to look at NASA's "pretty pictures", I must ask if the object at 7pm to the Sun is a comet, and if it might be Comet Holmes? Cheers, Carl :? :?:

APOD 19 JUNE 2007 THE SUN AS SEEN FROM ERIS

G'day,
The artist's view shows the sun in the background. Pictures I've seen of the sun as seen from Pluto show a small dot not much bigger than a star as seen from Earth. The sun in this picture as seen from Eris is much bigger. Which is correct?
