Red object in the image?
There is an interesting red object at approx. 2o'clock just outside of the "denser" area of the cluster. Is this perhaps a background galaxy, maybe seen side-on? Thanks! -Chris O "Do astronauts ever bump their heads on Dark Matter during space walks?" Probably not wise to talk of...

What's in a name?
Frankly the only constellation that ever remotely resembled what it's called to me is Orion [smile]The obvious constellation that resembles what it is supposed to be, is the triangle, (Triangulum) that -indeed- looks like a triangle. [/smile] So... it's Orion vs. Triangulum... Orion, great constell...

OK, I have to ask this simple question: why is Venus extra bright right now? For some God-unforsaken reason I was up before dawn, but that turned out to be quite a treat. I couldn't believe that the bright object is in fact Venus and not see caffeine-depleted hallucination. BMAONE23: Marvelous image...

Space Walk
Sunday's picture: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070916.html shows an absolutely great photo of the space walk, but I have to ask, where are the stars in the background? Perhaps they are too faint with the required exposure for this photo? Many thanks -Chris O "Back in 1984, they didn't hav...

APOD Aug 24 is difficult to believe
The camera specification, actually Fire-i 501b is the model number: http://www.unibrain.com/download/pdfs/ub1394cam/Fire-i_501.pdf The CCD specification: http://products.sel.sony.com/semi/PDF/ICX424AL.pdf I have no astronomy experience, but this CCD seems more geared for industrial applications than...

The Black Eye
Hi, Thanks for nice SAURON link, that is most fascinating. It seems unimaginable about the amount of data the astronomers can get at with this project.
[bad joke-of-the-day]
So... who gives SAURON the Black Eye? Why Dr. Frodo Baggins of course!

The shortest path between two points... is a squiggle?
You think they could save a bit on the fuel, if only the astronauts would avoid those crazy left turns
