Awesome picture, but it reminds me of a model moonscape from the 60's puppeteer show, "Thunderbirds".
It looks so clear, clean, and crisp, it doesn't look real. But it's coooool!!!

Re: APOD: Abell 2744: Pandoras Cluster of Galaxies (2011 Jun
With dark matter, I thought it was still a theory and still nota proven scientific fact. If in the APOD it is coloured blue, does this mean you can measure it? How do you measure a theory? A discrepancy perhaps? The dark matter in blue is an ESTIMATE based on what it would take to achieve the gravi...

Re: APOD: Abell 2744: Pandoras Cluster of Galaxies (2011 Jun
" Abell 2744, dubbed Pandora's cluster, spans over two million light years" So this entire cluster spans just twenty Milky Ways (@100,000 light years in diameter)?? Doesn't seem possible that all those galaxies are in the space between the Milky Way and The Andromeda Galaxy, 2.2-ish milli...

Re: APOD: Abell 2744: Pandoras Cluster of Galaxies (2011 Jun
The collision of four smaller clusters is going to be even and symmetrical? That is kind of limited thinking when we know now that the Universe is a chaotic place. Who says the hot gas and dark matter distribution has to match? They are two different things. Two galaxies collide, their motion stalls...

Very well done. This is the first 3d image that actually looked like it was sticking out from my monitor. I actually found myself, trying to get up higher to see deeper into the crate in the upper left. ![Embarassed ](./images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)

Cool APOD. If man becomes a space traveler; the Crab may be something he doesn't want to get too close to. I was thinking almost that identical thought, what with intense radiation, wildly spinning magnetic fields, possible fluctuating electric fields, particles flying everywhere, unexpected...

If a regular star like our Sun, can swell to red giant and then down to white dwarf with flares between expanding and contracting, heating again and expand and cool and contract, along the way, I see no reason why a star that went super nova, and is now a neutron pulsar should not do the same thing...

Great Picture!
I wonder if the dust clouds are still forming stars, but we don't see any emission or reflection because the stars are still inside them? Or, are they finished and not dense enough to collapse under their own gravity any longer?

Re: APOD: Kepler's Suns and Planets (2011 Mar 29)
In College, back in 72-74, in a Science class, I did a presentation, or paper, (I forget which now), on how many planets could reasonably support life in the Galaxy. Even at something like .1% that is like 200,000,000 planets. At 200 billion stars. Even .001% is 2 million. I also thought back then t...

Great picture, AWESOME image for using 1970's pictures!!!!! To me it looks like a volcanic rift. Not so much like the grand canyon which was cut by water as the ground ROSE UP.
