Re: APOD: At the Core of NGC 6752 (2012 Feb 10)

What is the radiation like in a cluster like that? If there was an Earth-like planet there, at the same distance from a Sun-like star, would there be life? Would the radiation kill bacteria? It is not like there is just one star to illuminate the sky. How bright would the sky be?

Magnificent picture!
Ok, here is one for you...just right of center is a big bunch of lines, above the north end of the canyon. Why does it look like a stick figure of a man plowing in a field?
Either that or it looks like a Chinese letter....

The Horsehead Nebula is not in this picture. It is way off to the left...see this picture for the direction/location...

If you look at the lower left of the Milky Way, the dark dust, if you look at it right, looks like an EAGLE with its wings spread out, and lower to the right, it looks like a FISH in its mouth.... Is it Red in the South, and Green in the North? or is it something else that explains the Red Color of ...

Does anybody know the approximate AGE of the star when it exploded?
Also, what was the estimated mass? And WHEN Earth time did the explosion occur? Did anyone record it?

Nice Picture.

It appears the head has its ...

Ann, do you hear the wolf whistle in Sweden? Thanks... The wolf whistle? Not around where I live, that's for sure. I actually didn't know there was such a thing, although it makes sense, since dogs (I think) can hear sounds that we can't. And wolves are of course the original dogs. :ssmile: Unfortu...

Orion is one of my favorite Constellations, and the Orion Nebula one of my favorite telescope targets. But it gets cold and wet, and I have not gotten out this winter to look at anything thing. Fortunately, in the Autumn it is in the early morning sky. I was able to get out at around 3:00 am, and no...

At first I thought I was looking at an explosion. Very interesting. Should have an optical picture of the same size to compare it to.

There is something else you don't see, especially in a still photo. At orbital speed you are going too fast to "fall" to Earth.

Re: APOD: The Diner at the Center of the Galaxy (2011 Dec 30

You do realize that this has taken place already. We do not see things in real time. We are about 26,000 light years from the Galactic Center, and so this event was over and done with 26,000 years ago, around 24,000 B.C. Still pretty cool, as hopefully, WE WILL GET TO SEE SOMETHING WE WOULD NOT HAVE...
