I don't think that you would be so dismissive of the risk of continually using chemical rockets if we have more accidents like the Challenger and Columbia tragedies. Each time, those accidents resulted in the complete shutdown of the manned space flights by the U.S. for several years while NASA wor...

The best solution, in my book, is to create an engine that produces a constant 1G thrust. Susatined 1G supplies the gravity and constant thrust supplies the speed. You would simply need to shut down the engines at the 1/2 way point, thruster turn the ship 180deg and then fire up the engines again. ...

Remember what happened to the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia? Using chemical rockets to leave the Earth and atmospheric braking to return is too dangerous and inefficient. It also takes far too long to get the shuttle ready for the next flight. Better to be able to control gravity to take o...

I somewhat agree, that sometimes the pictures are too unrelated. On the other hand, there can't be a something new in astronomy every day, so rather than just showing some old picture of something we've seen enough of already, I prefer that they show something that is not always clearly related to a...

Re: LHC results
It will be interesting to see what new answers the LHC will provide. Evidence of WIMPs, Higgs bosons, supersymmetry, gravitons????? Even more interesting, what new questions will be asked? They are going to discover that quarks don't exist; that what they thought was a single "quark" is r...

One thing I hope that discoveries from the LHC and other future particle colliders will lead is better understanding how the gravitational force is created. Until we learn if this fundamental force can be controlled by some artificial means, long-term space travel will remain very difficult to atta...

They haven't started the collisions yet. The beam has only been going one way by now. But anyway, the media has sure managed to hype this doomsday CRAP up. 1 - If tiny black holes are created, it would mean that they are also created constantly, every day, in the atmosphere, since high energy partic...

Re: it is very well worth being an apod
I had a great time watching this video on APOD, before it was posted here And what about the other thousands of videos on the internet that you would equally enjoy watching, but that also have absolutely nothing to do with APOD? Should they be shown too? If people like these kinds of videos, they s...

I can't be bothered to take a poll of pro and antis but gosh, there are some tight-****** people here. I came to mock, people dancing feugh! Got even more scornful when I saw Mr.Matt and his 'dance', but I stayed to enjoy, and laugh. Loosen up, you diehard apodders. Enjoy! This is a piece of fun, f...

I'd rather have an old star picture..... Sure you would. Then you - or someone - would start (another) thread that talks about how 'we've all seen that image before' and 'why can't TPTB at APoD find something new, that we haven't seen 100x before', etc., and the whining would continue ...... Lord.....

Please use a proper flash video player for APOD
It's great that the video sequences are now in flash instead of animated gifs. But please start using a flash video player with some controls. Jeroens JW FLV MEDIA PLAYER is free, simple, unobtrusive and very good. http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Media_Player That would give viewers fulls...

It completely ruins any april fools joke, when the authors lets you know that it's an april fools joke! It's suppose to be something you figure out, and of course some people don't figure out right away. This joke is so obvious that nobody would be fooled, so why give it away like that. That just ru...

Should we just change the site name to McNaught Of The Day!!? It's been on APOD on January 5,9,13,15,17,18,19,20 and 22. Do we need to see more almost identical pictures of it? A couple of them stands out, but this is too much. l3p3r, your picture is good. Atleast as good as the ones on APOD. Nice d...

Do we really need to see this commet almost every day on apod? It's not exactly a galaxy or nebula that'll be around for viewing for thousands or millions of years....... I guess you are right. I just thought it was overdone a little, since they are all pretty much the exact same. It was on apod on...
