Re: APOD: Deep Nebulas: From Seagull to California (2024 Jan 23)
In answer to the gentleman who wondered why. Most of the people who look at APOD are interested in what's up there; the names of Nebulae and stars and what it would all look like, if you have eyes the size of dinner plates; could keep them open for a few hundred hours hours; see in specific transmis...

Re: APOD: The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules (2023 Sep 01)
Is there a good explanation of how a globular cluster forms? I can visualize a single or a binary star resulting from a contracting/rotating gas and dust cloud. I find it harder to visualize a giant cloud collapsing and forming individual concentrations of gas/disk that rotate independently to form ...

I am blown away by the amount of detail they were able to capture. Being able to render the subtle variations in the outflows of gas and dust is extraordinary.

I always find it tempting to imagine that images like these are actual planetary or stellar disks. How large would the telescope need to be to actually resolve a planetary disk, about three Jupiter radii, from a distance of 95 pc, in visible or IR, light.I know the math is there, I just don't know w...

Re: APOD: The ISS and a Colorful Moon (2015 Jul 31)
There is a greenish/purple/red mottled appearance to the image that looks more like a processing effect than it does "natural color". The effect is more noticeable in the darker areas on the moon. It may be my monitor, so I'll reserve judgment. I see this sort of feature in over-processed ...

Re: APOD: Millions of Stars in Omega Centauri (2014 May 29)
I'm interested in knowing how a globular cluster would form. Were they formed before the galaxy formed? Can they exist inside the galaxy or do they only exist in the galactic halo? How do the mechanics of star formation differ in globular clusters than from say stars forming in the gas and dust clou...

Re: APOD: Micro Moon over Super Moon (2014 Jan 21)
My question is: How much greater is the tidal force of a super-moon to a micro-moon, (assuming the distance from the sun is the same in both cases)? What does this translate to in average tidal changes,( %-wise)? Also, if you consider that, as the moon orbits the earth, two zones of deformation move...
