Re: APOD: Open Cluster NGC 290: A Stellar Box... (2014 Jun 0

It is thought that a globular cluster is the remnant of a smaller galaxy captured by the Milky Way. So are open and closed clusters like these the results of a super-massive nova and the new stars were born in the stellar nursery and emerged when the smoke cleared?

Re: Curiosity Sees 'Evening Star' Earth

Hey, let's see if we can make it a priority to see the full-sized pic on APOD that we can zoom in on of Earth and the Moon. It's got to be better than a missing crater or whatever you have planned for tomorrow.

Re: Elusive Jellyfish Nebula (2009 May 14)

OK. The math here doesn't make sense to me. The article says that light from the supernova that created the nebula reached Earth about 30,000 years ago. But it goes on to say the nebula is 5,000 light years away. How does that work?

The Helix Nebula (2009 March 03)

Wonderful pic of the Helix Nebula. Did anyone notice the dozens of galaxies inthe background? There are probably many more but that was my quick estimate of the number. There are many beautiful spirals and eliptical galaxies to see if you expand the picture to the max size. Awesome! Jim White States...

M57 Ring Nebula pic (APOD 18 Sep 2008)

I've been wondering about something when I view pics like the M57 Ring Nebula at higher resolution. Just below and to the left of the nebula at the 7 o'clock position there are four stars arranged in an arch. I've seen grouping of stars like this in other pics where the stars appear to be a string o...

Local Galaxies and Stars Within

I remember reading somewhere that we cannot discern individual stars within galaxies such as M31 and M33 even with our most powerful visual telescopes including the Hubble. Is that true? If it is then what I think are individual stars within a frame of M31 are either foreground stars within the Milk...
