Re: Submissions: 2024 April

Here is a unique video from the April 2024 total solar eclipse -- at least, I have not seen anything like this posted on APOD or elsewhere. Harms (photojhh@gmail.com) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53647460998_293a60c04a_o_d.jpg From Oak Point Park In Richardson, TX, it was fairly cloudy for the April 8, 2024 eclipse. We had about 20 seconds of *visible* totality out of the 3 min 28 seconds...

In a way, this image was 38 years in the making. When I viewed the 1979 total solar eclipse near Goldend...

Re: Cause of Triple Sunrise (APOD 2009 August 4)

Regardless of the debate about angles of incidence, atmospheric effects, etc., one thing is absolutely certain: There was something with reflections between the photographer and the sun. MadCat-75 made that point by outlining reflections in the wide angle shot. I brightened that part of the photo an...

Oops!

Oops! Qev is absolutely correct. If we got into a Martian helicopter and observed the scene from directly overhead, those shadows would be parallel. But from the painting's angle, close to the surface, the shadows would indeed appear to radiate from the sun, just like in the photo Qev linked. I stan...

Big flaw in Martian sand geyser painting (APOD 23 Aug 2006)

Did you notice the big flaw in the artist's rendition of Martian sand geysers? (It's a great test of, "What's wrong with this picture?") Answer: The shadows on the gas jets are oriented as if the sun were in front of the Martian horizon! Of course, in reality the rays from the Sun are near...
