Re: Jupiter's New Impact Scar (2009 July 23)

Someone in this string was talking about the 'climatic effect' on the Jovian atmosphere. I seem to recall reading a long time ago that someone had estimated that the presence of Jupiter decreased the number of impacts on the Earth, secondary to the size, location and gravitational influence of Jupit...

Globular Clusters

Very nice post on the globular cluster Omega Centuri. Is there any thought on why globular clusters are globular rather than being flattened spirals like them more typical galaxy? Obviously it involves rotation around the communal center of mass, which one anticipates that globular clusters don't do...

Lunar and Mars Craters and Impact Frequencies

There is continuing discussion about Earth impacts from asteroids and coments and the regular observation of extinction events. Has anyone plotted frequency distributions of the size of impact craters on the moon and on Mars (where erosion is a minimal issue), to make estimates of the size (and or v...

Has anyone calculated whether Valis Marinaris (sic) would be above sea level or under sea level if there was surface water on Mars. I wonder what our mid ocean ridges and/or trenches at tectonic plate boundries would look like if they were visible from the air.
