Re: Messier Craters in Stereo (2009 Dec 11)
This is one of the few stereo images I've seen where the 3D effect really "pops" for me! Usually I get only a vague impression of 3D; maybe it's the relatively close vantage point from which the source images were taken.

Re: 29th Mar 2007: Jupiter movie loosk odd
An example of a 'Great Circle' is the Equator. This circumnavigates the globe at it's greatest dimension. An example of a lesser or small circle would be the Arctic Circle, or the Tropic of Capricorn. They also circumnavigate the globe but at a higher or lower latitude than the equator, so they are...

Re: 29th Mar 2007: Jupiter movie loosk odd
This movie of Jupiter looks a little odd: 1) The moons are not orbiting in great circles aroud the planet; bodies in orbit should not do that when they go around a spherical mass. (Around a cylindrical mass dressed up to look like a sphere, maybe.) They are orbiting in lesser circles at higher lati...

Why is south up?
I wonder why so many photos are rotated for general audiences? In this case, the APOD shows a scene where south is up. The image under the link "summary" ( http://www.digitalsky.org.uk/occultations/20070302_occultation-summary.jpg ) shows the true orientation. Nothing is really lost in the...

APOD site defaults to yesterday's picture
For at least two days now, when I go to the main APOD page I get yesterday's picture (& text). On Tuesday it showed Monday's, today on Wednesday it shows Tuesday's. Each time I have to click the forward arrow to go to the next day's page. This happens for me in both Firefox 2 and IE 6 for Window...

Moving Moons of Saturn (APOD 27 Jun 2006)
In the Moving Moons of Saturn APOD, Rhea appears to be moving in a slow, retrograde orbit. This is just an effect of the relative motion of the camera / spacecraft, right? I wonder why the Cassini imaging team didn't control the frame to keep Rhea more centered, or even give it apparent motion leftw...
