Re: Alpine Conjunction (APOD 2009 Jan 2)

By what miracle of science do the photographer and camera both appear in the frame? Good question. I did not pick up that point. As Tamas Ladanyi is credited with the picture I assume therefore that the photographer in the picture cannot be him, unless the camera in the picture is somebody else's a...

Re: Fox Fur; Unicorn; & Christmas Tree 2008 Dec 25

... I trust that Monoceros does not get destroyed any time soon! It's apparently up to you. Illustrating a dim constellation is less like connect-the-dots and more like draw-what-you-want. Did you see modern office equipment in one of the linked views? Yes (in the second link) but that just confuse...

Re: Fox Fur; Unicorn; & Christmas Tree 2008 Dec 25

I'm still though having difficulty seeing the Unicorn shape of the constellation Monoceros. I think I need to see some Unicorns to be sure! Try these three artistic renderings: http://www.astrosurf.com/jwisn/monoceros.jpg http://hsci.cas.ou.edu/images/jpg-100dpi-10in/19thCentury/Aspin/1825/Aspin-18...

Re: Fox Fur; Unicorn; & Christmas Tree 2008 Dec 25

Hi apodman. What I thought looked like the head of a horse is what you think looks like a "goat-bison-manatee-thing". I like that description. The eye looked like a small ear to me. :) I'm still though having difficulty seeing the Unicorn shape of the constellation Monoceros. I think I nee...

Re: Fox Fur; Unicorn; & Christmas Tree 2008 Dec 25

Seeing shapes in astronomy images can be great fun. The Fox Fur Nebula and Cone Nebula are very obvious in the image and I could make out the general shape of the Christmas Tree. I did though think that the Unicorn was the area that looks (at least to me!) like the head of a horse which is to the le...

Re: The Dumbbells (2008 Dec 17)

Thank you bystander and Chris for your replies, which are greatly appreciated. I did see the line between the two images but I wondered if that could simply be where the two images in an otherwise same area of view were joined. That the two nebula are not in the same area of view is not at all obvio...

Re: The Dumbbells (2008 Dec 17)

In the explanation to the APOD it states the "images were made at the same scale, so the apparent size difference is mostly because one is closer". I am unsure though if their apparent position to each other is as seen in the picture, that is can they be seen together like they appear, or ...

APOD of December 14 2008.

In the explanation to the APOD of December 14 2008 it (currently at least) states "Curvature by the wide-angle lens makes foreground trees and a nearby less vertical than they really are". Something seems to be missing after the "nearby"! I guess it is the structure on the right,...

Re: Arp 273 - November 15 2008

Presuming that the bright source @ 4:00 is a foreground star, are you refering to the arc just above that bright point? If so, there is another in the diffraction spike of the red foreground star (near the smaller galaxy) and another in the very faint tidal trail at the 9:30 position about twice th...

Seeing shapes in astronomy images can be fun. I think the Crescent Nebula looks like the head of a ghost (that's assuming what I think is the Crescent Nebula actually is!). :)

Re: APOD of November 7 2008.

Thanks BMAONE23 for your reply. It is appreciated. I have to admit that I'm still having trouble definitely making out the Butterfly Nebula. I assume the Dark Dust Lane is the obvious broad band that runs between two large bright areas and then bends up to the right at its right end. If it is, then ...

Cygnus Trio (APOD 2008 Nov 07)

The image in the APOD of November 7 2008 is excellent. I am though unsure which area is the Butterfly Nebula. I think the Crescent Nebula is the small bright blue area just above the centre and the Tulip Nebula may be the small bright area just in from the right edge above centre. I realise that I m...

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap081030.html Guys, you're doing a grand job of keeping in with the theme of Halloween. Three 'ghost' pictures? :D The humour isn't lost on me at any rate. Nice one guys, this is what you do best. I wonder if we'll be seeing the Witches Nebula soon? Or do you have a...

The image is fascinating (so is the colour version that is seen through the "above image" link in the explanation to the APOD). The version used for the APOD does remind me lots of the flying saucers seen in old movies! I can imagine something opening the bottom and stepping out! :)

The APOD of September 22 2008 is a very nice composite image. Clicking on that APOD however brings up a fuller view version which I think is even more effective and perhaps should have been used instead of the cropped version.

The seam was not obvious to me and I only noticed it when I looked closer because of the topic. The image has been used as an APOD on several previous times, with its oldest use being the APOD of March 7th 1998. Image editing will likely have improved since then. I think it's a nice image.

I have no problem with repeating an APOD image, but the explanation should be updated. In that to the APOD of July 13 2008 it states its image is a "composite of 30 images taken two years ago", which is the same as that given in the APOD of May 8 2007.

It is presumably a wrong link but I wonder if there may be some connection that I'm unaware of. :? but sti...
