Re: APOD: The Pencil Nebula Supernova Shock Wave (2024 Feb 23)
Yeah. I blind solved the images at astrometry.net, saved the solved FITS files it generates, open them in PixInsight and fully solve them there (which very accurately incorporates a distortion model), and then use a tool designed to align images for the purpose of creating a mosaic... which is sort...

I will miss Orin's presence in the APOD threads. I enjoyed his posts and his love of cats. He seemed to always enjoy finding the cat picture that is often included as one of the links in each APOD.
I will miss you Orin.

Re: APOD: Northern Lights over Southern Europe (2023 Apr 25)
I think today's APOD is a very beautiful image. I like the colors and the fact that the light parts are not too bright and the dark parts are not too dark (I think there's a term for that but I can't remember it at the moment). It seems to be perfectly balanced to my non-photographer eyes.

Managed to see it from the Southern UK and get this 2 hour timelapse: Unfortunately I'd had a couple beers so couldn't drive up to the moors to find a better vantage point. Glad I set up the camera though. Nice video! Thanks for sharing it with us. An...

Thank you Cousin Ricky, Eclectic Man, and johnnydeep. I enjoyed your posts and learned things I wasn't aware of before. When looking at today's APOD I initially just assumed the view was toward the north. But then I thought, Polaris sure is high. Then I read the caption and realized that the view is...

De-anaglyphed version for those without glasses or who simply prefer this viewing method. Configured for cross-eyed viewing. Thank you, Chris! I really appreciate you providing these. Whenever an APOD is an anaglyph image, the first think I look for in the discussion is your version for crossed eye...

Re: APOD: Reflections on the 1970s (2023 Feb 02)
Speaking of astronomers ignoring the 1970s, I'd be more interested to see where NGC 1976 is? It is the year I graduated from high school, and it was also a bicentennial year in the USA. What is the reason that 1975 and 1977 got a reflection nebulae but why was 1976 ignored? NGC 1976 is the Orion Ne...

Here's a 3D photo I took a few years ago. It's also viewed by crossing your eyes. Click on it to get the best version. I used my camera and my brother's camera set to automatically take one photo every 10 seconds. They were not well synchronized, so I only got a few photos with the same bolts of li...

Re: APOD: Leonid Meteors Through Orion (2022 Nov 28)
Yes, the Leonids stormed in 1999, with rates as high as several thousand an hour. This shower is caused by debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle, which has a 33-year period. Near perihelion it releases a lot of debris, so we tend to see high activity every 33 years, coinciding with this. Activity is like...

I find this APOD to be especially beautiful. I like the balance and hues of the colors. I like the beautiful couple that are enjoying the meteor shower and I wish them much happiness in their marriage. I also appreciate the annotations. Way back in the late 1990's or maybe it was early 2000's I drag...

Thanks Chris (and Neufer). I can get the two images to partially overlap easily, but I can't get it to focus. I'll keep trying! As I mentioned in my earlier comment above regarding the number of MAGIC telescopes, I see 3 in the APOD picture yet the MAGIC site indicates that there are two telescopes spaced 85 meters apart. See: https://magic.mpp.mpg.de Also, wiki also mentions two telescopes. So, the picture in today's (July...
