Well, I must say, my first day at trying my hand at posting here was both humbling and educational. I suppose I tend to spout off my first thoughts without thinking it completely through. Of course, surface ice meltdown didn't occur to me. And, oh yeah, that thermal expansion thing slipped by me too...

So it's melting/So it's swapping ends
Wouldn't the amount of water melting off be offset by displacement of the ice? Take a glass of ice water...does the level rise after the ice has melted?
