Re: APOD: The Last Launch of Space Shuttle... (2011 May 18)

I & family went down to view what was supposed to have been the final Atlantis launch [STS-132] on 14 May of last year. ... Oh and.....you know those lobster-tanks at front of seafood restaurants where you can pick your own for dinner? http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/26345466/sn/1890016888/name/5%...

Re: APOD: The Last Launch of Space Shuttle... (2011 May 18)

I was at the STS-134 liftoff, the final launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour, on the NASA Causeway. The launch was amazing, got some good photos from angles different than the ones on the NASA Kennedy Space Center Media Gallery webpage http://mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov/index.cfm . But, Endeavour went i...

. . . Three-and-a-half years later, it was struck by a deer, and totaled. . . . You now have me imagining deer flying around like little missiles just looking for cars to strike. I expect the deer's opinion about the nature of this encounter was somewhat different... Being a Southern country boy al...

Re: APOD: Supernova Sonata (2011 May 26)

I thought this was really neat. It certainly wasn't the most musical piece I've ever heard, but after listening a few times I could create a mental image of what is going on. Astronomy is so visually based that we often leave out those who are visually impaired. This is a great innovative way for a...

In the historic first manned mission to Mars, two astronauts were charting the Martian surface. "Just look at that," one radioed back to Earth, "How beautiful this alien landscape is, untouched by man." At that point he was cut off, his radio communications knocked out by unknown...
