I was just told by aliens that 200 Supernova's occurred within ten years over 4 millon years ago in the Pin Wheel :D I like the way we talk about what just happened; like this newly found Supernova. Just to think what's happened since.. We can settle this. I checked the data logs of the SWI...

In the presentations I used to give at our local planetarium, one of them focused on the speed of light & vastness of space. For the ending of that particular show, I used the line: "I mentioned the Andromeda galaxy earlier - and that it's the farthest object we can see with the naked eye. ...

Re: Astronomically Bad Jokes (Or good)

An astronomer goes on an expedition to Africa to observe a total eclipse of the sun, which will only be observable there, but he's captured by cannibals. The eclipse is due the next day around noon. To gain his freedom he plans to pose as a god and threaten to extinguish the sun if he's not released...

Re: APOD: The Last Panorama of Spirit on Mars (2011 May 30)

While I marveled at the engineering invested in Spirit & Opportunity, one thing I thought conspicuously absent was a means of cleaning dust off the solar panels, particularly since they fully expected that to be an operational hazard, possibly even eventually fatal to their survival. In my mind,...
