Re: To Fly Free in Space (2009 Sept 27)

Can't believe nobody brought up.... "This is Major Tom to Ground Control I’m stepping through the door And I’m floating in a most peculiar way And the stars look very different today For here, I am floating round my tin can Far above the world Planet Earth is blue And there’s nothing I can do ....

To Fly Free in Space (2009 Sept 27)

When I first saw that pic 'way back when', I couldn't help but think were it me in that space suit, knowing I was untethered, you couldn'ta drove a needle up my butt with a jackhammer! I said then & I say now, "Hurrah, to the McCandless Puckerstring!" But gosh, can you imagine the view...

Re: Abell 370: Galaxy Cluster Gravitational Lens (2009 Sept

"Although curious, one initial response was to avoid commenting on the arc because nothing like it had ever been noted before. In the mid-1980s, however, better images allowed astronomers to identify the arc as a prototype of a new kind of astrophysical phenomenon -- the gravitational lens eff...

Re: UV Andromeda (2009 Sept 17)

I'm now leaning strongly towards lens flare or other photographic artifact. I blew up that segment several x to study the overlap areas of the tori, and discovered another, though very faint, which I circled in red in this screencap: http://www.flickr.com/photos/starhoppers/3937309994/ Oddly, it doe...

Re: UV Andromeda (2009 Sept 17)

I really liked this one. Andromeda is an absolutely beautiful galaxy, and it was nice to be able to compare it in visible and ultraviolet. You can see so many details in UV! Here's something that I found on the UV image that didn't appear in the visible. The image I cropped below includes the brigh...

UV Andromeda (2009 Sept 17)

Now THERE's you an APOD-worthy astrophoto!
The visual spectrum overlay adds a super touch - kudos & great job on the selection.
This one - if not my favorite it's right up in there with the best of 'em!

THANX!

Re: The Holographic Principle (APOD 2009 September 13)

They come so easily to me, I really wonder about those who say they can't see 'em! If you can cross your eyes, then you have the 'talent' - just have to learn to 'uncross' them past point of focus. And all that takes is, looking at something farther away! It's sort of like learning to use averted vi...

All well & good, I suppose....but somebody help me out here. What does the 'A' in 'APOD' stand for, again?

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap090824.html Nice picture, but ... ... OK, I'll argue with ya. I don't even think it's a 'nice picture'. But I couldn't agree more with your message. I'm afraid I'm in that "outside our atmosphere" boat. I used to give lectures at our local planetarium be...

Not to troll, but.... "... their instruments go off the scale, or to infinity , so to speak." Your association, or someone else's - either way, it's pretty much of a reach, innit? Word of convenience, without basis?? &&& "They have no way, as of yet, to measure infinity ac...

I admire APOD greatly, and count on them not only for presenting their 'routine' coverage, but also to cover breaking news. I've been somewhat disappointed that it's now been several days & APOD has not yet featured this fantastic news event. Thinking " Surely, today!" I started my mor...

Earth shadow....

Hi all, New guy on the block, so thought I'd take a moment to short-intro myself. I'm an amateur astronomer of some half-century experience, & APOD rocks! -- it's where I start my days...sorta my 'home page'. I didn't realize there was an associated forum, but today a question came up....I looke...
