Re: APOD: Color the Universe (2020 Apr 05)

I call it: "Shrooms" or "the Universe According to Timothy Leary"

Maybe "Cheech and Chong's Unreleased Movie"

After all, drugs are not a 20th Century invention.

Re: APOD: The Pale Blue Dot (2020 Feb 14)

Amazing, isn't it? For all we know that pale blue dot represents the sum total of intelligent life in the universe. Why can't we get along? Even if we aren't all there is, aren't we enough? I mean, that's it; that's the sum totality of the human race. Why can't we get along? I'm no greenie or enviro...

Draw an imaginary line from between the letters O and V and the top of the page (the actual printed letters) and you'll find a heart shape. And, when the sun is just right, you can see dragons in clouds. And sometimes Jesus on toast.

Re: APOD: 5 Million Miles from Pluto (2015 Jul 09)

Sadly, this image is over processed and over magnified. Processing should never obscure detail that is present in the original image. If you look at the shaded region to the right of the darker area, which runs diagonally from the upper left to the lower right, and compare it to the same area in th...

Looks more like the TIE fighter vanguard of an Imperial invasion to me.

"My God, it's full of stars"

Then again, it is a galaxy, so that's kinda what its supposed to be. But still quite beautiful.

Re: APOD: NGC 7331 and Beyond (2014 Dec 18)

In the background, at about 11 o'clock I see a great 3-armed, barred galaxy. Does anyone know the designation of that particular galaxy? Any other, better photos of it anywhere? That's NGC 7337. This is a pretty good picture of it. A quick search didn't turn up anything much better, if at all. Than...

Re: APOD: NGC 7331 and Beyond (2014 Dec 18)

Oh, that is so interesting! I don't have access to my software here, but I have to note the presence of some extended bluish "fluff" in the lower left part of the image. I suppose it could either be some galactic cirrus associated with the Milky Way, or else it might be the brightest part...

Looking at the APOD (not the original photo) can anyone tell me what that blue structure is in the lower left corner?

Travelling Light Year Distances

Pardon my ignorance and my noob-ness. But I've got a question that I've asked on other boards and cannot seem to get an answer to. It's a simple question, really, but no one seems to be able to answer it: If a galaxy is 100 light years across then, travelling at the speed of light, would it take 100...
