Re: Jupiter's New Impact Scar (2009 July 23)

from webster's online dictionary.org. http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/definition/impact 1. A single collision of one mass in motion with a second mass which may be either in motion or at rest. 2. Specifically, the action or event of an object, such as a rocket, striking the surface of a pl...

Re: Jupiter's New Impact Scar (2009 July 23)

we are calling the black mark on jupiter an "impact scar" since Jupiter is pretty much composed of gas, what exactly did the comet (or object) impact? or is "impact" just the generic term in this case? Does this mean that every tiny spec of dust that encounters our atmosphere get...

Re: Apollo 11 (2009 July 20)

Let developing countries like India & China (who apparently can't afford to give much of their population decent food & shelter much less to cut back on pollution & greenhouse gases) send men back to the moon. I would like to think that any developing nation has a desire to put someone ...

communicating only through video messaging
I think we can assume that if we are obese and have severe bone loss that video messaging would not be the mainstream medium through communicating. unless you like looking at obese and boneless creatures.

What if the 'Big Bang' was really an 'anti Bang' and we are all anti what we would have been had the bang been a real bang? If so, there is an earth on which dwells peace and harmony. there is probably someone in the anti universe wishing the same thing. there might be someone looking at our earth ...

I don't know of any recorded incident of a meteor hitting the moon. but how would you record it? its not like the meteor will light up like it does in the earth's atmosphere. the moon is probably pelted with dust all the time since it doesn't have an atmosphere like the earth's. we can easily see me...

ok, so this makes sense.

instead of waiting to go the whole way out to the kuiper belt to find objects as old as the solar system, we now have a resevoir of material locked in the saturn rings. pretty convenient !!

don't you think when we figure out how to break the light speed barrier that we will figure out how to break the mass barrier as well?

just a thought

maybe collisions with the earth and Mars have made the orbits more circular??

if there was water on Mars, wouldn't its entire orbit be changed if that mass was removed over time?

going to left field with this one... and perhaps off the field... What if we are thinking about this question the wrong way? what if our bodies don't have to go through with going 100 light years in order to travel that distance. Re: Supernova Remnant N132D

I am intrigued by the statement in the Oct 25 APOD: "The expanding shell from this explosion now spans 80 light-years and has swept up about 600 Suns worth of mass." How is this "swept up mass" estimated? Is there perhaps a deceleration of the ejected matter that can be observed...

I guess the evidence is mounting for a very fast paced center with a huge black hole. But....... we can't forget that the distances are still even more massive. Normal Stars living out their normal lives, EVEN at the center.

To be honest, I just think its a big coincidence. I mean how can a galaxy share the same dynamics as a hurricane. but maybe we don't need to think about it that hard.
