Re: Ice Bergs in Hong Kong Harbor

In the 1960's somebody had an idea to tow an iceberg to Los Angeles to help solve the drinking water shortage. Only 1/2 of it would melt in the two year trip from the antarctic.

Yeah, I remember now. it was an article in Popular Mechanics so long ago.

melting ice

Another thought not found here is how much of the melting ice becomes water vapour being added to the atmosphere and carried and deposited on land masses, not directly affecting ocean water levels ?

" Being fooled by incompetent people " is surely a problem scintific study has to deal with as well as we mere mortals have to deal with our elected officials being fooled by special agenda groups. That being said, the description of the APOD http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap060308.html ...

GRB and supernovae

Is it possible that GRB are special kind of LASER emission ? I ask because some time ago it was suggested Eta Carinae emits LASER light and it is about to wow us mere mortals with an event.

I agree, it belongs to the other APOD ( Astrology Post of the Day ). I remember the physics professor telling our class that if you can't assign numbers/units of measure to it, it doesn't exist .

guesses about the Big Kablooye

i ,for one, would rather contemplate this Universe in pictures ( APOD past and present ) Big Bang is a misnower. the english language has not developed to the point of having correct words describing the event. There was no explosion ( in the newtonian physics sense, like a big firecraker ). I inter...

the math available to Einstein was much more developed than was available to Newton. Both brilliant thinkers. I would like to advance that Newtonian physics ( called classic ) and Quantum physics are not mutually exclusive, as the subject of the original post mat imply. :D Pass the ice cold one :D

[quote="Em"]Can someone please explain to me in very simple terms the quantum theory.

Thanks,

It is the study of particle motion ( like subatomic level ) Newtonian physics studies how substances interact ( like what happens when you hit an apple with a baseball bat ) :)
