Re: APOD: Phobos: Doomed Moon of Mars (2012 Oct 28)
In the 1950's as a result of It's unnatural-looking, elongated shape, the huge indentation carved out at one end had the USSR conclude that Phobos was a space station built by an advanced civilization inhabited on Mars. It's likeness reminiscent of a potato has a certain appearance that easily plays...

Re: APOD: Star Streams of NGC 4216 (2010 Nov 27)
I love this image simply for the manner in which the three galaxies are positioned, aligned in near symmetrical fashion, as if placed by some artist in a painting, incoming flying saucers in a row on approach to invasion.

Re: APOD: Home from Above (2010 Nov 15)
Wow. An iconic image for the images. If I had to choose just one picture that captures all that APOD yearns to convey about the wonders of the Universe, this has to be it, retitling it Rodin's Thinker Meets Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

Re: APOD: Multiverses: Do Other Universes Exist? (2010 Nov 1
Two comments. 1. Sorta re-defines "big" in a big way, don't you think? 2. The title "Astronomy Picture of the Day" conveys the sense of imagery that is uniquely alien in otherworldly beauty, exotic in its splendor, the sort of visual grandiosity we have come to expect of APOD. I ...

Re: HEIC: An Extraordinary Celestial Spiral
This remarkable picture from the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows one of the most perfect geometrical forms created in space. Still, as beautiful and compelling as this celestial spiral is, the bizarre, inexplicable hexagon on Saturn's North Pole remains my nu...

Reminds me of two old movie titles The Gay Divorcee (1934) One Hundred Men and a Girl (1937) Thank you for providing us with the the correct titles of those I couldn't exactly recall. So now kindly add movie aficionados, to the list of scholarly avocations that include star gazers, space travelers,...

Re: Very like a WHALE (APOD 2009 May 2)
Hello Ishmael. Do you smoke your camels or ride them? Ishmael is the narrator of Herman Melville 's Moby Dick . Captain Ahab is the captain of the whale ship Pequod . The first line of the novel ... Call me Ishmael. Thank you for expanding upon the literary scope of interest here at APOD. You might...

Re: Very like a WHALE (APOD 2009 May 2)
Shades of Captain Ahab... Just ....call me Ishmael. Hello Ishmael. Do you smoke your camels or ride them? There was always something quite weird about the old 'Camel' tag line back in its heyday. "I'd walk a mile for a camel", you'd do what? for what? huh? , would never make it today if '...

Re: lenticular clouds over new Zealand
It is difficult to explain the eerie, spooky sense that comes over me when seeing images of lenticular clouds like the one featured in today's APOD. Most of them take on an out-of-worldly appearance of beauty, in bizarre shapes, strange hues, looking almost like something but not quite so, just hang...

July 20:Crescent Rhea Occults Crescent Saturn
Images of such unimagined, awe-inspiring beauty evoke in me the scene from the movie "Contact" of Dr. Arrroway, played by Jodie Foster, breaking down, crying, emotionally overwrought by the magnificent view of space she manages to catch a glimpse of during her trip to the Vega system.

Jupiter Over Ephesus
Breathtakingly spectacular image like nothing I have ever seen, the increased magnification capability maximizing its breadth and scope to the utmost. Beautifully eerie, profoundly haunting in a way that makes me feel as if having traveled back in time. Spooky. Wow.

Planets over Paranal:Saturn's Comparative Immensity
Saturn's immense size as the solar system's second largest planet is breathtakingly demonstrated as seen alongside Mercury and Venus, appearing nearly equal in (luminous) size. Taking in consideration the distance/size/luminosity of the three, it's astonishing to see Saturn as brillliant as it is.
