orin, I had to take the roundabout way to view it, too. I went to the BA site and searched for it. Phil's images are some good ones, as well. When you do get there - enjoy! :D

The Astronomy Pictures of the Year (2007)

They are really good choices. I especially liked many of the images of Comet McNaught, since I never had a good view of it here in my location, and was glad to see that it was one of the first ones included. Plus, the "Dark Sky Over Death Valley" was another excellent choice. I'm sure it w...

Now, I'll hazard a guess that it's another aurora that was caught in the image, and it just so happens to bear an uncanny resemblance to a comet. As others have postulated, if it were an actual comet, we'd have heard/read about it on the many other space/astronomy websites that are out there. And bt...

How does APoD find these pictures? I know that many of the 'credit/copyright' lines directly beneath the images have the imager's info/website(s) listed, but in this case, it does not. So how would they have found this image? (Plus, I was interested in the specifics of the image, and will probably ...

Good catch. I had read that elsewhere, too.

Too bad here on the east coast, at least where I am, they weren't viewable. I do like looking at the pix taken by others, though.

And now it's a shame, neither the link Floyd312 posted, nor the 'Archive' feature will allow the image to be accessed. It seems whatever happened to the site over the weekend affected images back to 9 Jul 07. Oh well, glad it's back!!! :D

Why is the date of the original post - Wed Dec 08, 2004 12:03 am - from so long ago? I wasn't able to view the 'youtube' video (not allowed at work!), and couldn't get the other link to open (stoopid pc!) but it sounds like it could've been those anticrepuscular clouds makc refers to. But never a du...

Strider2k, you are right, that is Tethys. The first link in the description, (linked as "amazing picture"), says that it is, indeed, Tethys. And I'm by no means an expert, but Axel, I think you're right: that small dark spot seems like it should be Enceladus, given the angles in which the...

It does look like another one of Saturn's moons. I was just wondering the same thing - which one it is. Hopefully someone who knows will be along.

(In the meantime, I'm going to follow some of the links, see if it's described anywhere else.)

Welcome aweisberg, One of the links in the description, http://www.skyfactory.org/vela/vela.htm gives a bit more info about the size of the image. More specifically, it's stated that the image is 19 times the size of the full moon, which is a minor difference, I know. Scrolling down a bit on that pa...

randall cameron, Firstly, my post wasn't about the "Belt of Venus", as you seem to think, it was about a rather disgusting "belt of smog" that I've noticed and thought that the day's APoD was a good spring board for my observation. Secondly, if all you have to complain about are ...

Belt of Venus, of smog! (APOD 15Jun06)

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html Reading the description for the APoD, I sort of chuckled when it mentioned the Belt of Venus. Only because where I live, (about 50 miles south-ish of Baltimore, MD, USA), we have a 'belt of smog'. Seriously! As I head to work in the morning, I steal gl...
