IC 2948: The Running Chicken Nebula (APOD 18 Apr 2008)

Today's APoD - IC 2948: The Running Chicken Nebula - found here: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html mentions 'Thackeray's Globules'. Are these similar to 'Bok's Globules'? Or are any of these 'globules' so named for whomever discovers them? I haven't researched these 'globules', but will...

Hi stargazer_7000! Excellent image! Makes me wish I could climb aboard my own rocket ship and head out there to see it 'up close and personal'!

Your site's nice, too.

P.S. I'm not a fellow, but wanted to reply anyway. :D

Obscure is not the word I'd use to describe those posts. Bizarre would be more appropriate.

But then, to each their own.....

I'm sure the universe is full of intelligent life. It's just been too intelligent to come here.
So apropos!

Sir Arthur C. Clark was a very interesting person, a visionary (I've read several of his books and really enjoyed them), and he will definitely be missed.... :(

Welcome, Erilon! Jump on in! :D And don't worry - most of us are pretty patient.
I did see what you were talking about - how the dust clouds look similar to a face in a sort of profile. It looked that way to me, too. Pretty neat!

Again, welcome aboard!

Thanks, Henk. And apologies for not being more clear. While I understand that Venus and Mercury will align more frequently, as their orbits are considerably shorter, I was meaning an alignment of the naked eye planets, (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter), as were shown in the second and third li...

Planetary alignments (APOD 10 Mar 2008)

Today's APoD - http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap080310.html - got me wondering: when will we have another alignment like the one linked to in the description, with the words planetary - http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020510.html , and conjunctions - http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020429.ht...

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html Now, reading the description, I am wondering what the "fascinating background galax[y]" is at about the nine o'clock position, on the far left....? What a beautiful galaxy! *Of course, the entire image is gorgeous, but that galaxy really leap...

While today's image is a beautiful one, I'm wondering if it seems odd to anyone else that there is so much light coming from those windows? I too find the images of stars, galaxies, dust clouds, etc., to be some of the best APoD's, but I do think that the more 'terrestial' images spark a lot of discussion as well. Case in point are: The APoD that depicted a strange light in a harbor in Australia, which many individuals were called upon ...

I was wondering if the 'window' was actually one of those darker dust areas...? (They sort of remind me of Bok's globules.)
Hopefully someone will be along to clarify.
