Welcome, bentsn! :) I downloaded and viewed the large - 14 MB - file, and the blurred areas are evident in that image as well. Maybe it's something to do with the lens, or perhaps when the images were put together..? The link I used was this one: http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/200...

Anyone else find it ironic that while dispelling one myth bout eggs APOD promotes another- namely that day and night are equal on September 22nd? Check out your ephemeris and then the USNO site (http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/equinoxes.php) about the equinoxes. And here's an expansion of that: Th...

Not to knock the viewing from Turkey, but I think it's more the imager, Tunc Tezel. He produces a lot of really good images, and he just happens to live there. You can click on his name under today's APOD to find out a bit more on him.

Happy reading! 8)

Re: anthe arc

i understand the long duration (32 sec) exposure causing the star streaks, but that doesn't explain the streaks going in different directions. the streaks should be either all going in the same direction or no streak at all if the camera is moving toward those stars... tom Out of curiosity, have yo...

Taken from here The general brightness of the image (along with the faint horizontal banding pattern) results from the long exposure time of 32 seconds required to capture the extremely faint ring arc and the processing needed to enhance its visibility (which also enhances the digital background noi...

FYI, PaulM: (this is a post by one of the maintainers of the APOD) I posted that video to APOD. About once a month or so, APOD posts an image that is not strictly related to the classical definition of astronomy or space science. Reasons for this are several, including broadening APOD's reader base...

I dont believe the Saturn total eclipse...
Just because it's hard to believe, doesn't make it any less authentic of an image. See here:

and here:

Try this: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEsaros/SEsaros.html It's not the exact link I was looking for, but it does have some good info. IIRC, the moon doesn't cover the sun fully during every eclipse. There are what are known as 'annular eclipses', which the sun looks like a thick-ish band or ring a...

Astrolabe - that wikipedia video link is pretty amazing! To Andy Wade, Pete, and anyone else that takes an affront to my use ot the word "whiner" in any of its forms: I am not using it as an 'ad hominem', in that I am not directing it at any one person, but instead to a group. And no, I wasn't whining: merely trying to take up some for RJN and t...

And as for the 'whiners' comment from Indigo Sunrise. How very dare you.... I dare very well, thank you much. You can't say it's not true. People whine about the silliest stuff. I'd rather have an old star picture..... Sure you would. Then you - or someone - would start (another) thread that talks about how 'we've all seen that image before' and 'why can't TPTB at APoD find something new, that we haven't seen 100x before', etc., and the whining would continue ...... While the video may be appealing, and interesting, it has nothing to do with Astronomy. Not even a little bit. Not an ounce. Not an iota. Nothing. It was disappointing to come to the site and see something totally irrelevant. It doesn't make me angry, or cause me to want to throw things, but it did...

Sounds like golbules are part of starforming regions Right, I got that they are both most likely star-forming regions, but was curious whether there were multiple names for the same thing, or if they were slightly or majorly different. Thank you both for the links. Wikipedia is where I started look...
