smaismrmilmepoetaleumibunenugttauiras ????????? I saw this 'wording' listed as "Tomorrow's Image" for Sunday's APoD, 15Mar09 , but was not able to figure out what it meant/stood for then, or now - even after seeing the image for today . Anybody able to translate? Thank in advance!

Re: Comet Lulin

Don't worry smita, you're not alone! A friend and I attempted to view it Monday night (23Feb), but had no luck either. I'm going to try again Thursday, since it'll be so close to Regulus and hopefully that'll be the perfect 'guide' to help me find it. *fingers crossed* Oh and - *hoping the weather c...

Re: Unusual Red Glow Over Minnesota (2009 February 17)

Some pretty interesting guesses.... But I do have a question re: these types of images - that is the type of image that gets APOD readers throwing guesses out there as to causes for things seen in images. Is there ever a definite answer/follow up to the questions posed by these images? I know there ...

Or... or you could use a search engine of your choice and type in something like "labeled Orion images", or whatever, and see what hits get returned. (I'd do it, but I'm too lazy.....) But that is just one way to get what you're asking for. Excellent image, today's , btw..... 8)

That was exactly my thought, when reading the description. Hopefully TPTB will see it and fix it. For posterity, if not for clarity!

I was sorta thinking the same thing. While the description is accurate and informative, the images are just a bit too symmetric - IMESHO.... 8)

Re: Oooh! Lovely! In Saturn's Shadow (2009 Jan 11)

Someone should print this off as a poster.... I actually was one of several winners in an online contest, and received an 18" x 36" poster of the 'sister image' to this. It is gorgeous!!! I have it hanging right above my desk where I can look (read: gaze longingly) at it every day. 8) P.S...

Re: Unusual Light Pillars Over Latvia (2009 January 12)

Does anyone else wonder why the effect is only seen on two of the light pillars? Kalvin touched on it, when s/he said, "not all lights are causing creating this effect". It seems that whatever the cause, it's rather 'localized'.

Interesting image. :D

That was going to be my next question, to any/everyone: has anybody been able to view the video right from the APOD page itself? Perhaps Mr. Nemiroff or Mr. Bonnell were able to?

Thanks, bystander. That's what I ended up doing. And it's a very interesting video!
I was just wondering why it had never 'loaded' on my screen. Probably some setting or other.....

Re: Lick observatory moonrise (December 12 '08)

Chris Peterson, et al., I didn't mean to say the distance wasn't accurate, just meaning that the image was amazing, considering the distance . Apologies for not being more clear. And to my very untrained eye, I still think there is some believablity to the whole 'moon illusion' optical illusion thin...

30 Km...? That's pretty far away. Not saying you're wrong, art, just sayin'. I think it's more likely one of those Moon Illusion things that we read about here from time to time. Or maybe using a telephoto lens adds to it, as in this beautiful image . But what do I know...? It's a great image, howev...

The Happy Sky (2008 Dec 03)

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap081203.html Today's APOD has a rather witty title. Although, I'm not sure that the sky is happy with all that light pollution/haze(/smog? Is that word still in use??) I didn't get to see this particular view of the planets and moon Sunday due to the weather, but Mo...

Today's APOD video was really cool!!! 8) I've only ever seen one fireball, and it was no where near as spectacular as that one was. (It was a while ago, and now I'm wondering if it could even be classified as a 'fireball'. I guess old age does that...) But what a fortuitous event to be caught on vi...

Hiya apodman, I agree - adaptive optics is amazing technology! And as you said, I also didn't realize it was first built/utilized back in 1989. We've come a long way! From that 'MAD' link, did you notice a gallery of images? I saw they had press releases, but couldn't find any gallery or collection ...
