Re: APOD: A Sailing Stone in Death Valley (2012 Feb 22)

So I watched the link that is supposed to show the rocks actually moving in the playa, but all it shows is the water slowly moving across the valley floor. There is one part at about 41 sec's, that shows a decent sized rock, and I thought, 'good, now we'll see something exciting!', but the camera op...

This video is fantastic! (And you're right, geckzilla - it does look cold! Beautiful, but cold!) I've seen the northern lights, but it was so many years ago it's almost like not seeing them at all. Here's hoping with the approach of solar maximum, I may get to see them again! Awesome A V OD!

Thanks, rstevenson. I thought it was some setting or other that I needed to figure out.

And also thanks for the link, owlice. I was familiar with Galaxy Zoo, but hadn't been there in awhile to see there was a 'spin off'. Or just hadn't noticed the link. :-P

Re: APOD: IC 2118: The Witch Head Nebula (2012 Jan 17)

G'day all. Pardon my ignorance here but I cannot, for the life of me, identify the "witches head" in this APOD? Should I be standing on my head to see it, or perhaps on my left ear (yes, I've tried both!) but still can't seem to see anything resembling a witch... Thanks in advance. Try st...

The 'Short Survey'

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for asking, but when I took the survey linked below the latest APoD's , I answered question 14, and then tried to answer Q 15, but my response to Q 14 was removed. I tried to click the choice for Q 14 again, and my response for Q 15 was removed.....? (All of m...

Images like this one are some of my favorites! I love the colors of the sky in twilight or early dawn, especially when planets and/or the moon are featured.

Absolutely fabulous image!

A green "orb" or patch is seen to the upper left of Aldebaran in the Hyades. The green object looks like a comet. But surely there is no comet there right now? Ann Good catch, Ann. I was going to point out the extreme red colored dots, one slightly left of the faint 'end' (top) of the fir...

Um... This can't be moonset, of a full moon, in the evening, can it? If it is moonset and not moonrise, then it has to be early morning, facing west. If it is evening, it has to be moonrise, in the east. And from the position of Orion, it can't be moonrise, so it must be a full moon, predawn. Well ...

Judging from what Mr. Schedler says about light pollution in his area - At 25 km distance the city of Graz with 250 000 inhabitants is a severe light source, you see its reflection to the thin clouds behind the hill. Typical limiting magnitudes from 40 degree altitide: Mag 4.5 (at humid situations) ...
