Re: APOD: Teimareh Petroglyphs and Star Trails (2012 Jul 12)

You should be able to take criticism without resorting to personal abuse. This has scientific interest although more strictly paleontology. And you should be able to recognize sarcasm. Also, the study of ancient drawings is not called paleontology - isn't that the study of fossilized organisms? May...

Re: APOD: Happy People Dancing on Planet Earth (2012 Jul 10)

Were the Opportunity rover on Mars to find inhabitants of the planet, lined up and dancing in some fashion; and to send pictures of said event back to the third rock; SOME people who view APOD would object were said pictures to be posted. After all, it is a different science from astronomy and woul...

I wonder how many people read the whole thread before commenting? I'm thinking... not many. That's what I thought, owlice: not many at all. Because then they'd realize that the video is only the 'home screen' for 24 hrs, and if they don't like it they can visit somewhere else until this time tomorr...

Here are a couple that I took using my binoculars as a projector:

(And now I'm in the market for a new camera; I had a terrible time focusing! )
But I was still happy to see something that no one alive today will see again!

I can't remember exactly how I found my way here, but I'm pretty sure it was through another astronomy website. It was a couple of years before I found the 'Discuss' link and wondered if I had anything meaningful to contribute. I still wonder..... :lol2: And I'm not sure that the link for discussion...

Re: What did you see in the sky tonight?

I saw nuthin' last night, it was cloudy. However, at daybreak, just before the sun was visible through the trees in the east, i saw a rainbow in the west. It was sprinkling gently outside, just enough to form a pinkish bow. The south side had just a hint of green and was a double bow. Also, about a...

Maybe it is time to set-up an alternative site called "Terrestrial Picture of the Day" for those who do not like astronomical photographs. :blah: Or maybe you can create that sort of site yourself and stay over there....... :really?: *we really need a 'dead horse' icon.

While TPTB updated most of the description/explanation from this APOD, they should have changed the part about the convoluted pelt that "lies at the upper left," to: "...lies almost at the center of the image." To me, the 'feature' in the upper left of today's image looks more li...

Re: APOD: Rocket Trails in the Milky Way (2012 Mar 29)

I was able to see these trails - very ghostly! What was most impressive to me is how the chemicals that were used seemed to appear (begin to glow/reflect) from out of nowhere. One minute I was looking at a dark sky, and the next these 'clouds' just kinda showed up. Faded into view, is about the best...
