Speaking of arms and rings, have there ever been any artist illustrations of what Andromeda would look like from a face-on view like ours has been illustrated from a face-on perspective?

Re: APOD: Approaching Asteroid Ceres (2015 Jan 20)
I was curious to know how thick vertically the asteroid belt was in terms of distance. Do spacecraft have a relatively safe passage through the belt on their way to explore the planets or do they have to hop over or under the belt to avoid a random collision?

I am taking a trip to Sydney at the end of March and will be my first trip south of the equator. I would dearly love to do some stargazing while down under, does anyone have any recommendations to engage someone somewhere somehow? Thanks!

Re: APOD: Shadows and Plumes Across Enceladus (2014 Aug 04)
Is it only in certain areas where these geysers are or are they located moon-wide? They can't be seen in the foreground at all, why would they be so fine and hard to see in the foreground? Could the rings of Saturn (and Jupiter) be "spent" remnants of moons that were eventually ground away...

for some reason i never thought saturn could be seen in real time like that from the vantage point of the moons orbit. is that real? then jupiter can be seen even better since it's closer and much bigger?

forgive my ignorance, but if it's 8000 light years away and it went off, wouldn't it take 8000 years to reach us? if it went off 7,999 years and 364 days ago, we could get it tomorrow, right? would we feel the effects much sooner than any light based images we are looking at now or the other way aro...

Re: APOD: Galaxy Cluster Magnifies Distant... (2014 May 05)
I've noticed thru the years of being an avid fan of APOD that photos that appear in their original format and sources are often opposite when they appear in APOD. I guess it doesn't matter in the grander scheme of life, but it's kinda annoying and i have to wonder why go thru the trouble of flipping...

Re: APOD: Solar Eclipse from Uganda (2013 Nov 08)
Is there any other place in the solar system where a solar eclipse appears exactly as ours do? Not to get philosophical about it if that's the right word to use, but how coincidental is it that our moon just happens to be at such a distance that it perfectly matches the disk of the sun almost exactl...

Re: APOD: The Colliding Spiral Galaxies of Arp 271 (2013 Aug
Just curious, how long would it take using conventional technology to travel perpendicular to the plane of our galaxy before a reasonably good view could be had to confirm that the milky way is a barred galaxy? Conversely, if we had a starship that could erase the limitations of speed and time, how ...

i think i understood what mr johnson was saying, but doesn't explain why the star's surface is sluffed off with an open hole on either side. shouldn't the surface be thrown off equally in thinkness all over the star with no holes or is it directly due to magnetic fields at the two poles of the star ...

Exciting discovery! i found it a little odd seeing a North/East legend on the photo. Is there a convention for north, south, east and west used in space? What kind of directional conventions are used for space or envisioned for space travel?

is there a correlation between the number of times a bar makes a rotation with number of years? i'm assuming the trailing arms would be longer and the spiral would be tighter?
