Aurora Pictures/Movies
Every time I see a picture of auroras somewhere in the world, I want to be there and not here. My goal is to learn how to take aurora pictures/movies, get the right equipment and chase solar flares. Does anyone have any ideas on what do I need to do about figuring out how to take low-light pics/movi...

Re: Black Hole Simulation
Thanks, I asked the question because I thought that a passing black hole would affect the characteristics of a nearby constellation due to the gravity of that black hole. Of course, that also depends on size of the black hole.

Black Hole Simulation
I found this link from slashdot.org about black hole simulation at http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18498-new-black-hole-simulator-uses-real-star-data.htm . The app can be downloaded from http://www.vis.uni-stuttgart.de/~muelleta/IntBH/ . I watched the embedded video but have a question about w...

Re: Avatar (what else?)
Well, when exactly I will tell you when I go the see the movie again. If my memory serves me right, it is when they are going toward Pandora. I do not know if it was computer-generated or an APOD image put in the background, but the left side of the screen is fully covered with the famous impage of ...

Re: Avatar (what else?)
Thank you.
The story may put Pandora far away from Earth, but the Jupiter shot in the background was unmistakable.

Avatar (what else?)
Is Pandora near Jupiter?
In one shot in the movie, as the spacecraft traveled towards Pandora, in the background was Jupiter - much larger and easy to identify by one of its signature red spots.

StarDust Dust
Pardon me for a non-APOD question. But this is the only place I know where someone may have the answer. Just heard on the news that the scientists discovered proteins critical to life in StarDust dust. And that may be a comet similar to that would have brought life to Earth. Well, my question is why...

Re: NGC 1097: Spiral Galaxy with a Central Eye (APOD 2009 Ju
Would the spiral shape of the galaxy automatically imply that a black hole in the center is pulling the mass slowly towards it? Like an eye of a hurricane.
Thanks,
Smita

I am just wondering if this image has been enhanced in any way?
I have never seen a sky like that before.

I am a newbie. So thanks for accepting my naivete. Also, I am not Christian, so please do not send me any religious stuff. Not interested in that. That said... Yeah, looks beautiful indeed.
Over the years, I have seen comets - the one I remember the most had two tails - so many years ago that I do not remember the name.

Re: Comet Lulin (2009 Feb 25)
I tried last evening around 9 PM (somewhat half-heartedly) and did not see anything.
Will try again tonight late. But next few days in Boston, MA area are going to be cloudy so chance of seeing anything is somewhat remote.
