Re: Moonbow and Rainbows Over Patagonia (APOD Aug 10th, 200
The page states that rainbows and moonbows are caused by drops of water behaving like prisms. That is one part of the story. The second essential part is internal reflection in the raindrops. Double rainbows are produced by single and double internal reflection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow#...

Microgravity experiments
[quote="BMAONE23"]The only problem with creating craters in sand on Earth and using this as a model for the creation of craters in the microgravity/vaccuum of space is that the craters are being created in sand on Earth and will only accurately reflect/model such an event, i.e an impact in...

Speeding through the Universe (APOD Sun Mar 9 2008)
I find it amusing that we can now tell how fast the earth is moving relative to the cosmos, when Relativity was born from the failure of attempts at just that over a century ago. Of course, Michelson and Morley were trying to measure the relative speed of light, in order to find our speed relative t...

Re: The Missing Craters APOD Nov.21, 2005
The other photos on the Japanese site show many more dust-filled craters. It would have been interesting to shoot something into the asteroid to create a new crater and watch how it forms, and then watch it fill in over time.

Tommorow's APOD (Deep Impact)
Approach and impact speed: 10.2 km/s. The times of the frames are listed with the individual images. Click on them at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/deepimpact/multimedia/comet_images_collection_archive_1.html Pretty pictures are all very well, but when do we get the spectrograph data? When do we...
