Have you tried the Calendar tool? It shows thumbnails by month. Available by clicking "Calendar" at the bottom of the APOD page.
On an unrelated note, I read your user name here and supply "one fish, two fish...." (etc.) and I'd bet I'm not the only one who does that!

Nice it would be.

Being able to do so in small chunks with thumbnails would keep the bandwidth requirements down.

Simply having links on an archived page "Previous" "Next" would make it much easier to go from one archived image to another.

Have much appreciation for this wonderful site. For about a dozen years it has been how I try to start my day. Helps to keep the rest in perspective.
