after posting, it dawned ( no pun intended ) on me he might have been looking at something else and his friend took the picture and did not know this object was in the field of view.

Could be an f/4 scope and a wide angle eyepiece, though the long train of optics outside the scope probably implies otherwise. It IS pointed QUITE a long way from the nova, even for a low power scope. It's possibly a compositional error on the part of the people shooting the photo, or maybe they were just looking at something else in the vicinity!

so? are you saying it is zoomed in up to 1 arcsec? how do you know that?

true, I don't know that but it did seem odd the subject of the picture was the point of light labeled as a Nova and the telescope was pointed such the subject would show up on the fringe of the eyepiece. If this thing has such wide field of view, the telescope manufacturer would eliminate the need for the finder scope mounted on the side and save some manufacturing costs.

Sorry sir to put up an argument here but the equipment shown on the picture is likely the quality instrument that could find a zit on the moon.

so? are you saying it is zoomed in up to 1 arcsec? how do you know that?

p.s. no quality instrument on earth cant find zit on the moon. see why 8)

within the desccription of the APOD under the photo, you will find several highlighted words that you can click on. Choose " nova " ,towards the end of the description, and from there you can float around the internet and find anything you want to know about Novae ( and other objects that peak your interest )

in few words, they explode because they receive some extra nuclear fuel (that makes them emit some light, right, so they get bright), and then they fade because this fuel gets consumed and/or expelled by explosion.

looks like the telescope is pointed at something other than the NOVA, unless of course that point of light is not the NOVA.
