When I read the caption, "locations in Asia and the Arctic were favoured by the New Moon's shadow" It reads to me like they are refering to the areas where the moons shadow fell.

The photographer did a great of capturing this photo. I believe you are looking at a solar eclipse.

Please, a solar eclipse is not due to the "New Moon's shadow" but to the moon's silhouette. And of course, when the moon's silhouette covers the Sun it is New Moon.
