Sun Pillar reflections (APOD 2008 December 15)

Sun Pillar reflections appear to be brighter than the directly observed Sun Pillars themselves.

Is this:

0) not true?
1) an optical allusion?
2) a result of horizontal Sun Pillar polarization?
3) a result of snow flakes showing more reflecting area to the water than to the observer directly?
