I know of one software package that helps me locate objects but I am not sure if it is OK to post things like that here at APOD.

Do a google search on "astronomy programs" or "distant suns" for example.

It could be intereresting that apod leave also coordinated of object they represent, when it meenigful. I mean here that i enjoy more google sky view than any telescope, and a work beteween both could be a interesting exercise... anyway i did find the interaction of math and nature in google sky, i guess it s finally a thru beginning, not just cloud of smoke. leave you some coordinate if you mate
